I went to stay at Matafonua Lodge with 10 friends in early November and had a fantastic time. I'm so glad we decided on the Ha'apai island group as it provided the perfect beach paradise and wasn't overdeveloped. Dave, Sally and the rest of the staff were fantastic. The accommodation was spacious with comfortable beds and a view of the... more

Matafonua Lodge truly is a wee piece of paradise. We visited with our three young children (4,6and 8) in October for 5 days. The beach, snorekelling and location were wonderful (much better than some of the outer islands in Fiji that we have visited) Sally and Dave are fantastic hosts. The kids loved exploring the nature and wildlife (geckos!) at... more

We stayed at Matafonua in July for 10 days with our 3 kids (aged 5, 3 and 2). Sally and Dave were unbelievable hosts - catering for our food allergies with special cooking, answering all my pesky questions ahead of time and with great patience and friendliness. Go Kiwis! However, what I wasn't told, either on the website or the... more

Matafonua Lodge was the perfect place for our island break. A bit like baching in NZ, the fales were clean and tidy, the Lodge was perfectly situated - beaches on both sides - when it was windy on one side the other beach was sheltered and vice versa. Sally and Dave (the hosts) are absolutely fantastic! Sally makes the BEST... more

I loved loved loved it. I won't go on too much because the other reviews pretty much cover it and I agree with them all. Comfortable beds, deserted beaches, aqua water, coral, fish, great hosts, great guests, beautiful gardens, hot showers, a great little book library... I will be back for sure. I visited on my own and the hosts... more

We stayed 10 days at this wonderfull place and had a great time. Having read the reviews, we had high expectations and were not disappointed. The fales (huts) are basic but clean and comfortable. The shared showers and toilets are always clean and the water is usually hot (solar-heated). The on site restaurant/cafe serves great meals. The menu is changed... more

You know how well people operate when things go wrong. Better that you hear through others than yourself. After Air NZ failed to arrive (due to returning to NZ because of mechanical problems) into Tonga until the following day (missing domestic flight to Matafonua Lodge, where we were booked in for 8 nights). Air Tonga connecting flights were missed, fortunitely... more

I had a great 5 night stay at Matafonua. When I first got there, I was a bit unsure for a few hours of how well I was going to like my stay. The fale was a bit basic, with only a bed and a cupboard, and a table and chairs on the patio, I was apprehensive about staying at... more

We have just returned from 5 perfect days with Dave and Sally in Ha'apai, with our 3 kids aged 15,13 and 10. We wanted a stressless beach holiday with no hassles of shopping or theme parks, we got exactly that! Beautiful beaches, lovely sand and great snorkling for all ages! Very relaxing place with a great book exchange and games... more

Matafonua Lodge is an awesome place...just to relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of Tonga! It's just on the tip of Foa Island (Ha'apai group), and is the perfect place for swimming, kayaking, awesome sunsets and just soaking up the sun. The kiwi hosts Sally and Dave are great people and always up for a good laugh...and a game... more
