I used Trip Advisor.com and a lot of other message boards in order to plan this trip. so I am going to try and write as detailed as a review as possible!
First off, this was the first trip to Aruba for myself and my boyfriend. I am 25 and he is 27 and we are from NYC, both professional people.
That being said, we were shocked at how expensive some things were on the island! We are used to high prices, but when we first arrived at the hotel and saw a $12.95 cheeseburger, it was a bit of a shock. Not a huge deal, but we felt some things were overpriced in general.
We had gotten a decent hotel and airfare rate, as well as a $100 food and beverage credit, and free buffet breakfast for the two of us for our 6 day, 5 night stay. This ended up being a great help to us because a lot of the times we did not eat lunch; we wanted to save room for the great dinners we were going to eat!!
We booked a Garden view room. I really wanted this trip to be perfect, as it was our anniversary...I called and emailed at least 2 times in advance to the Radisson, requesting a room in the Bonaire Tower, NOT facing construction, also a high floor. We arrive to get a room that was all those things, except facing construction. We immediately called the front desk and I mentioned I spoke with the manager Frank, and were moved into a room on the 3rd floor of the tower, facing the palm trees and slight view of pool. We found the room to be quite nice, except for the bathroom being EXTREMELY tiny. The two of us could not be at the sink at the same time, no way !!
They also sent us a complimentary bottle of champagne and cooler on our first night, that was a great touch. Found the congierce and hotel staff in general to be quite helpful. People were extremely friendly and had a lot of great conversations with locals.
Laguna Fish Market; really enjoyed the breakfast buffet. Plenty of options--everything from cereal to custom made omlettes. Our waiter was Glenn, really nice young guy and we enjoyed speaking wtih him.
Loved the beach, probably one of the nicest I've ever been to in the Carribean. Crystal clear water, warm temperature, immaculate sand, nice big palapas...Be warned though, you must wake up at 7am on the dot to get a front row one..I can only imagine what it would be like in the high season..We used #7 most of the trip, we liked it since it was all the way at the end and secluded. We also did the tubing activity next door through Aruba Watersports, which was quite fun, our boat driver gave us a really wild ride!!
Resturants, rated by how much we liked them::
Madame Janettes, by far our #1 choice, there is nothing we can say about this rest. that hasn't been said, except you must try it yourself to see how truly, insanely wonderful it is! We sat outside at a great table, requested the watier Rick, super romantic with gentle acoustic guitar and live singing...Our first night and just started our trip off the right way...Truly phenomenal..I had the Shrimp and my boyfriend had the Grouper...So good that we had to take pics of the food !!
Gasparito, Our # 2 choice. Also sat outside, nice and out of the way. Excellent service, and we enjoyed looking around at the local artwork. We had the Aruba Combo which is keshi yena, kerry kerry and red snapper, and we also had the coco shirmp. We enjoyed trying the local cusiine a lot.
Blossoms, our # 3 choice; mediocre service and very good sushi and chinese. I cannot comment on how the hibachi is, as we sat in the japanese/chinese section. But it did take us literally one hour to get the 2 sushi rolls and peice of salmon sushi that we ordered. Not a big deal since we are on vacation, but it was quite slow and the waitress was a bit unattentive. We shared the sizzling mignon and that was also excellent. Nice peppery finish to the meat.
Texas De Brazil, our #4 choice also had a great time here...Straightfoward Rodizio fare...great service though...Join the E-club to get the 2 for 1 special, it's definitely worth it then. Otherwise I would say way too pricey. Fried plaintains were quite good. Ribs and the house sirloin are definitely top two meats.
Sunset Grille, our # 5 choice. This was definitely the biggest disspointment of the trip. We saved it for our last night, and the service was poor at best, and the food was mediocre and extremely overpriced.
First off, I had went into the resturant the day before and requested some sort of surprise for my boyfriend, as it was our anniversary, and I wanted to make it extra special. The manager, Ronni said that he would notate it and there would be a little surprise at dessert. This request was not fufilled, and I found that to be quite dissapointing as this was our last night, and the date of our anniversary. We did however get a nice table overlooking the waterfall outside, as requested.
Check out the Aruba nights book for a free Cesar salad for 2 coupon if you like to save money, as entrees here are VERY pricey!! The salad was straightfoward, nothing great.
Now for the entrees, everything is ala carte, and not that great to be honest. From our experience, they left you unsatisfied for the money. First of, our waiter brought over a glass of wine we never ordered, then a bottle of white wine, then when my boyfriend was waiting for his wine to go with his steak, as he had requested, he did not receive until after the steak had been sitting there for about 15 minutes. This was unfortunate because obviously a steak goes quite well with a glass of wine, and he is a bit of a wine and steak junkie, so after so many errors, it was another annoyance. I had the lobster tails, which were just that...nothing over the top. Also the two sides were scalloped gorgonzola potatoes and creame spinach, also so/so. We had the famous chocolate coconut souflee, which I liked but my boyfriend was not so crazy about. After the mix up with the no anniversary thing, the manager Ronni did do his best to accomodate us. But both of us walked out of there underwhelmed. You can easily drop $250 in there for a medicore meal, some wine and dessert. I would have went to Madamme Janettes again instead of this place.
Okay, so finally activities wise we did one tour; the ABC Jeep Extreme Safari, half day tour. Our tour guide was Gabriel, really nice guy. My boyfriend got to drive the truck and we had a blast bumping down the hill to the natural pool. Whole tour was great, very fun, but ostrich farm was a little boring after a while. Would never do the full day tour though, too long. Also headed downtown to do some shopping.
Try the grocery for alcohol, we found it was a great way to save some dough. We went to Ling & Sons and stocked up our fridge with Balashis and some wine. Really helped us out, and was quite convient to just fill up our cooler bag with some Balashis to bring to the beach in the daytime.
Nighttime in Aruba by the high rise hotels is all about gambling. No clubs or bars that we saw at least. Go downtown for that. We skipped that as we were content to just hang with each other, and we like to gamble anyway.
All in all, we loved Aruba. Definitely one of the cleanest and friendliest islands we have ever been to in the Carribean. Watching the sun set on the beach is priceless, I took a ton of pics of that!!
Radisson is quite beautiful, and I am glad we stood there. Although there were a few bumps, the resort is quite luxuorious. When we were there, they did not seem to be doing a bit of work on Gilligans cafe, so there was no noise from that at all. We might have lucked out with that one.
I reccomend getting coupons!! We both like to get deals, and Aruba has a ton of them. We personally signed up for the Aruba Owner's Discount Club and used that for 2 of our dinners, for 10% off, as well as some match play coupons, etc. Definitely worth it.
We would return to Aruba!! I would also say rent a car, as cabs can get expensive. If you would like some more information than this very lengthy review, email me at lilacs100@aol.com.
