Just got back from a 12 day trip to the Grand Pineapple Resort in Negril and am missing it already!
I was feeling a little uneasy upon arrival after reading some of the iffy reviews about the food, hagglers on the beach, loud music. To my surprise, everything truly was "no problem, mon."
The resort itself is definitely "colorful" to say the least. The cottages bright yellows, oranges, green, white, and lavender...the rooms inside, even brighter! The room was clean, cozy, and comfortable. The AC in our room worked great and the cable TV actually had a decent variety of channels for when you want a little indoor escape from the beach. The ambiance was just right...easy going, fun, whimsical. At night, the little frogs and crickets go crazy and sing their hearts out until dawn, also adding a lot of character to the tropical surroundings.
Just like the other person who wrote a review, I too was "upgraded" to an oceanside cottage! After exploring the grounds, I preferred this side because access to the beach and restaurant/bar was so much easier. The street that separates the garden side and ocean side can be a little scary to cross. ( There are "safety-patrol" type guards that hold up stop signs to help you cross!) The music didn't bother me much at all. It's generally pretty mellow reggae music...and every other song will either be One Love, Three Little Birds, or No Woman No Cry. As for the water pressure and hot water. It was great...that is when the water was on! =) Just wait a bit all will be good. They seemed to turn off the water between noonish- 3:00pm and in the wee hours of the night! The Grand Pineapple is an incredible place with ton of character. As long as you can keep a relaxed and anything goes attitude...you'll enjoy this place.
The staff was INCREDIBLE! Very kind and genuinely happy people. They seem to really enjoy their jobs and the people. The waitresses and waiters at the restaurant always greet you with a smile and are like old friends after a couple days. Robert danced with the music as mades his way to and from the bar to get our drinks! Andrew, one of the bartenders, makes a mean pineapple & bannana daquiri and sometimes serves multiple drinks balanced on his head! The staff that work in the watersports area is also amazing...especially Leroy and Clive! Two very, nice guys that are fun to talk to and will help with anything! The security staff gets two thumbs up! Because I traveled with another woman friend, we felt much more safe knowing that there were always at least 2 or more security guards at the resort 24 hours a day. Their presence would keep the beach hagglers at a distance so you could lounge comfortably! They also like to know when you leave and return to the premises. The security crew can look a little serious and stern..but, when you strike up a conversation with them, they too are some of the nicest people, especially Kirk and Oliver. The staff at the front desk and tour desk area were always helpful and very friendly. I could go on and on about how wonderful the staff was and how they added so much to my trip. A huge thank you and hug to them!
Looking back, I was very glad to have selected an all inclusive package. The buffet style food was decent. For breakfast, they always have a made to order eggs/ omelet station that was good. They offer the standard bacon, sausage, french toast, pancakes, potatoes, sweet pastries, fruit plater, cereal, and sometimes ackee and saltfish! Lunch and dinner are pretty similar. There's always a veggie dish, some sort of rice, chicken, some kind of meat, some kind of fish, dessert, bread rolls, soup, cheese and fruit plater, and a small salad bar.The convenience of not having to worry about where and what to eat was a huge plus. Since the Grand Pineapple package was so reasonable, I didn't feel like I was "throwing away more money" if I decide to venture up the beach and eat out! We ate at Kuyaba ( B+ for food, and A for view), Rock House Restaurant ( A- for food, and A ++ for view), Ricks Cafe ( C for food, B+ for view, A for cliff divers entertainment).
My friend and I went to Jamaica to lounge, relax, and have a little adventure. We definitely got from our trip what we wanted. After lounging for an hour or so after breakfast, it was nice and convenient to have the option of using any of the non-motorized sports equipment they had available. We spent many mornings and afternoons kayaking along the beach or to the platform about 150 yards out into the ocean and jumping off into the water. The view from out there is spectacular and serene. There is also a huge big-wheel style tricycle you can take out as well...fun, but a lot more work to travel a short distance! We never used the little sailboat, but it looked like a lot of fun! Twice we went on Captain Moses' glass bottom boat for some snorkeling near the little island about a 15 minute boat ride from the Grand Pineapple. The snorkeling is fantastic and the purple fan coral is beautiful. For $25 this trip is highly recommended.
This was a trip to remember for me...a lot of it due to the incredible staff and service the Grand Pineapple provided.
