I am interested to read all the positive reviews of the Casa Verardo, because our stay there last year was absolutely awful.
We had booked a room in advance for four nights and been assured that it was a "lovely, pleasant room with great views."
When we arrived however, we were shown to a large, dingy room that was so dark it took us until the next morning to discover how awful it really was.
The room was within stretching distance of another building, which blocked out all the light, and with people looking in, meant we had to get dressed with the shutters closed.
The room itself bore no resemblance to the rooms on the website - in fact, it looked like staff quarters, with formica furniture, and bits of the bathroom falling off.
When we spoke to reception, a very supercilious young man told us that our room was not available but that it would be by the next day. We therefore packed up the following day, but when we showed up at reception were informed that the room was not available after all.
It was impossible to speak to the owner during our four days there, and we were furious about a) the quality of the room and b) the smirking, couldn't-be-bothered young men on reception (possibly the owner's sons?) I can only assume that if we hadn't been young women they might have taken us a bit more seriously.
On the second last day of our stay, we were eventually moved up to the room we should have had by an embarassed women, the woman who had send me the original email describing "our" room, and it was very nice - but that is after livinig in an annex next to the broom cupboard for three days and nights.
When we complained on leaving about the way we had been treated and asked for a discount, the man on reception claimed that we had been offered the room after the first day, but had declined - which was a completed lie - and that there was nothing wrong with the room we had had.
Eventually, he conceded why we might be unhappy with the original room, but again, refused to let us speak to the owner or to give us a discount.
When we said we would be making a formal complaint to the Ventian Tourist Board, he just smirked and said go ahead, Casa Verarda had very good relations with them and they wouldn't take any notice of a complaint.
The experience left me raging, and had I been a man, physical violence would have ensued.
They are the most smug, arrogant repulsive hoteliers I have ever met, and even now I am still raging - I can't believe we actually paid them.
I would strongly advise anyone not to give them your custom, and instead go to the nearby La Calcina - it is much nicer, cheaper, and they won't treat you like crap.

How much different can be people's feelings. I have always honoured the reviews on this website: this is because this time i wish to answer to a client's review whose kind of tones is very similar to personal unwarrented insults. When a guest checks in and he is not happy with the room reserved, we promptly try to change the accomodation to satisfy him. If the room has not a good view (it sounds very strange the reviewer was accomodated in a room without view if the room with view was confirmed to him!) we are happy to upgrade for free to a room with a view if it is available (even if not confirmed by the guest). If the room is not clean (obviously accordingly to the guest's personal standards) the housekeeper promptly makes her best to satisfy the particoular guest's cleanliness request. When we confirm a room we use to point as well the number of the picture on the website connected to the room: this is to assure the resemblance between the website and the hotel. Please note in none of the rooms of Casa Verardo the are formica fourniture: the hotel has been completly renovated in the past years and it has been declared Historical Palace by the Italian Authority (even due to its period fourniture). Regarding the staff behaviour i suggest to Tripadvisor reviewers to read all the other reviews on this site as well as the reviews regarding the Hotel; the remarks of this reviewers quite seem to be of a guest who was not here at Casa Verardo (probably so it was as the reviewers suggest to stay at La Calcina - very nice hotel - that is on the other side of Venice compared to Casa Verardo and not "nearby" as the reviewer says) and who probably was unhappy with his time in Venice.
