My wife, my daughter and I stayed at the Al Ponte Mocenigo hotel for 4 nights as part of our 2 week trip to Italy. I found the hotel thru Rick Steves and once again Rick's recommendation was perfect. We had never been to Europe before and heard from several people that Venice, while unique and beautiful, was very touristy, very crowded and that 4 nights was too much. Well, had we stayed near San Marco square/the Rialto bridge area, I would probably have agreed with that, but the location of this hotel was perfect. It was close enough to walk to that area but far enough away to feel like we were more in the heart of Venice where the Venetians lived. We loved going over to the park area 5 minutes or so from the hotel and get sandwhiches and drinks from the local deli and eating in the park with all the local Venetians. We met and talked with several people that lived there and loved being away from the tourists. Walter and Sandro, the two owners of the hotel, were very helpful in providing information on the area. Their other desk worker, Donatello, was very nice and also helpful in pointing out things on the map. He recommended one of our favorite restaurants in all of Italy only 5 minutes from the hotel, which was Nino Risotto. We also enjoyed taking day trips to Murano and Burano as well as taking the traghetto (short gondola ride across the grand canal which only cost 1 euro) from the San Stae stop near our hotel to the less touristy area across the canal with great shops and a nice wide walking path to people watch!. Also, their free breakfast was very nice and served in the cute little courtyard each morning. They had plenty of cereal, fruit, yogurt and the best warm apricot croissants you'll ever have. Given how expensive it is to eat in Venice, it was nice to have such a filling breakfast. Many times we'd skip lunch or share a pizza or panini for lunch and save a few euros. Also, they had free internet access at a computer that was right outside of our room, so my teenage daughter enjoyed keeping in touch with her friends and we were able to check train schedules and weather, etc. All in all we loved the Al Ponte Mocenigo and will definitley stay there again if we ever get the chance to return to Venice.
