“Amsterdam Pulizter Hotel - Great hotel”

Hotel Pulitzer, a Luxury Collection Hotel

5 of 5 stars
Worcester, United Kingdom
Jul 24, 2008

You really feel you are in Amsterdam staying here, standard rooms are not huge but the character of the place makes up for this. Friendly and efficient staff, excellent location 5/10 mins to Dam Square area and 15 min walk in the other direction to the museums and shopping areas. The area around the hotel is definately upmarket, away from the noise and tourists of the more lively areas. I walked everywhere, didn't need to take public transport once. The only negatives I could find - the gym is tiny only 4 or 5 machines and the food is OK not brilliant but overall I would definately recommend this hotel to anyone. Good value for money for the price paid.

We stayed five nites at the Pulitzer this july--couldn't be better !
Fabulous location, wonderful room with top level amenities in every respect, and one of the most pleasantly staffed property we've ever enjoyed. Front desk/concierge/floor staff could not do enough, and always with a smile. Big bucks, and worth every penny.

“Delightful!”

Hotel Pulitzer, a Luxury Collection Hotel

Jul 8, 2008

The hotel was delightful, staff very helpful and courteous, and the location fantastic! We wish that we could have stayed longer! We also had a two level room. The hair dryer was in a strange place - attached to the desk drawer, The big problem with that was that the desk was on the 2nd level, accessed by a ladder type stair - very inconvenient. However, I requested a hair dryer and one arrived within minutes, so no problem. Breakfast buffet was very good, and all in all the stay was a lovely experience.

“Mosquito bites everywhere!!!”

Hotel Pulitzer, a Luxury Collection Hotel

Jul 7, 2008

We liked this hotel very much despite a few problems. Front desk staff friendly and helpful. Their business center had 2 computers with free internet access, and there is a 3rd one in the lobby area. There are lots of cozy nooks so if you're looking for a quiet area to be alone and read, talk with a mate, or for an area to play with small kids, this hotel is great for that too. The buffet breakfast was awesome! Location also very good, as previous posts have mentioned. Ten to fifteen minute walk to the Dam, 5 minutes to Ann Frank House (get tickets online or you'll wait FOREVER TO GET IN!!!). We had canal view rooms, and it was spectacular to see boats going by all the time. I have 3 complaints- the air conditioning was substandard, we awoke with dozens of bug bites because we had the window opened during the night one one of our nights, and even when it was closed, they must've still been in our room, and still awoke with dozens of bites the next morning. Thirdly, the bed is too small for two people. The comforter is so thick, it took the place of another person when you put it aside. Asked for a thinner blanket and they responded without issue. The cookies they leave in the room are quite nice, as is the turn town evening service with chocolates. Front desk recommended Long Pura for indonesain "rice table" meal and it was fantastic. Just around the corner from the hotel on Rosengracht. I can also recommed Amigos, an argentine steak house that was excellent and reasonably priced., also on Rosengracht. Skip the Tulip Museum just up the street from the hotel- waste of time.

“Not a prize-winning hotel...”

Hotel Pulitzer, a Luxury Collection Hotel

2 of 5 stars
New Jersey
Jun 25, 2008

This was my second stay at the Hotel Pulitzer. I mainly chose the property for it's location (I used to live in the neighborhood and absolutely love the area). Unfortunately, my recent trip to Amsterdam followed two stays at true five-star hotels.
5 Issues:
1. It's overpriced and they charge you for everything. When you request a "canal view room," be aware that even if it is available and the hotel is not full, they will still charge you for the view and not even consider a courtesy upgrade.
2. The front-desk staff is friendly, but makes a lot of mistakes. They seem to be a little behind on information regarding your reservation (what is the point of calling Starwood to update your credit card info if they aren't going to update the system and you have to do it again with the front desk person?). There was a lot of confusion around what my reservation entailed (breakfast, payment with reward points, people in the room) and I had to correct them about not having breakfast, not paying with reward points, and being the only one in the room.
3. The rooms are in desperate need of renovation. How odd is it to get the same room twice? Well I did, and since staying in it 3 years ago, not a single thing changed. I was surprised to find chipping paint in the bathroom (which is also poorly lit).
4. It's not really all that clean. My first hint that the cleaning staff wasn't up to speed was when they knocked on my door at 11 am and I requested another hour and they rolled their eyes at me. In addition to their attitude, cobwebs and dust were prevalent and the only thing that changed from day to day was a made bed. Turn down service didn't even include a foot mat after my first day and I had to request a room service breakfast menu from reception when they didn't leave one after the first day.
5. It's not really all that luxurious. The bathroom is not grand and fabulous (where's the spacious tub, state of the art shower, flat-screen tv, and comfy chairs that are synonymous with luxury???). The bed is comfy...but that's about it.

3 Positive Aspects:
1. The location. You can hear the bells of Westerkerk and the canal location is exquisite. You are inside the centrum, which is key and you can walk everywhere.
2. The concept. Staying in a canal house is an experience and makes the hotel very unique and Dutch.
3. Some staff members. The room service staff and bar staff were friendly and professional, not to mention prompt and courteous.

Overall, it's not worth the price.
