“Must See in the Mayan Riviera”

This is a must see in the mayan Riviera. We have kids aged 10 and 7 (boys) and a 2 year old daughter. You actually get to hold rather large crocodiles and all the kids loved it. Walking through the Croc pen was also amazing. Feeding the animals was neat and the guide was very informed.

Anyone who misses this attraction that is not offered by the tour companies is missing something special.

We went to Xcaret and did the dolphin swim and while that was awesome, Crocun was even better!

“Family of Four Loved Crococun!!”

First, like a couple of others, I was spectical about visiting a "Zoo", thinking that we would see a few poorly treated, caged animals as part of a tourist trap.

I was very pleasantly surpised that this was not the case at all.

I would classify Crococun more as a Rehabilitation Center than a Zoo. Many of the animals have been rescued from homes where they were mistreated. The crocs are bred to be re-released into the wild to replenish the population that suffered(s) from poaching.

The guides here are all veterinarians in training. Our guide was very knowledeable, funny, sincere, and patient. He did not rush us through the tour, but really took the time to thoroughly answer all of our questions at each stop, and gave us lots of great photo opportunities. In fact, he placed our kids in certain areas and took the photos with our cameras himself to make the best shot possible. For example, he placed the kids behind a crocodile, then had the croc open its mouth, and the photo shows a closeup of our kids right next to an enormous toothed croc!

We saw and handled/touched, crocs, a boa, monkey, deer, and iguanas. The landescaping is very nice--it is like one large, lush, tropical garden.

The animals are rotated so that it is not the same animal being presented all the time to tourists. They have a few days away from the tourists.

This place was not at all crowded--6 others in our group, and one other tour going on at the same time with 8 people that we saw occasionally.

You can buy for a couple of $ a bag of fruit and nuts that you can feed the animals with to get better photo opportunities.

Small gift shop and restaurant. Friendly, low-key, polite staff.

I can't imagine that anybody who goes here will be disappointed.

“A Great Hands on Day Trip”

The crococun zoo was a great day trip and we'd definitelly do it again.

The guided tour takes about 1 and a half hours so it won't take up a whole day. You have the chance to touch and hold croccodiles, snakes, parrots, iguanas, hand feed white tailed deer and also feed Spider monkeys and coati. You may also have a chance to interact with some wild monkeys who live in the area and have become friendly with people. There are various other animals at the zoo that have been confiscated from people in Mexico keeping them illegally, including occelots, monkeys, various snakes and other reptiles. All the animals looked to be well taken care of with the exception of a couple that were recently rescued

The guide we had was extremely good and made the whole afternoon very enjoyable. The guide is free but you can tip him at the end of tour if you enjoyed it, $10 per couple is about average.

The entrance fee for adults is $19 so it is a very reasonably priced excursion. Non flash photography is allowed in the park.

We had a blast. My son is an animal lover and he says it was the best day of his life. Felt like we had the place to ourselves. Our guide was amazing and worth every cent of his $20 tip. It only took 90 minutes to go thru but wow.

I will add some photos.

It is a "hands on" experience for sure!!!!!

“Best Daytrip in Mexico!!”

Crococun Zoo

We absolutely loved Crococun! We spent a day there in 2004 and are returning there for our next trip. It was by far our favorite day of a 2 week stay and we loved every minute of it!

To get there we took a collectivo from Playa Del Carmen which can drop you off on the side of the highway right beside the entrance.

The entry fee is small, around $15 USD per person and half price for children. They have a small store there where you can buy authentic mexican candy (boy did my daughter get a surprise when she bit in to her candy ~ hot, hot, hot!) and soft drinks. You can also buy a small bag of peanuts for $1USD to feed to the monkeys in the park.

We received our own guide - Sophia - and we were taken all through the park. She took us up to each exhibit and explained what it was, where they lived and somethings that made them interesting. At many of the exhibits we were able to hold or touch the animals. While we were there we did not see many other guests and we felt like we had the park to ourselves!

I felt that the animals are all held in safe and humane quarters. This isn't a big commercialized place so the proceeds go towards taking care of these animals yet there aren't a zillion guests pawing at them.

In particular we enjoyed a baby monkey that followed us around for the afternoon! In total we spent about half of the day there. At the end we tipped our guide and she was very pleased with her tip. The entire time she was very pleasant and informative! I felt like I could have been friends with her if we lived in the same area.

Interesting story - during our day at Crococun there was 1 hairless dog that was allowed to run around and be free while the rest of them stayed in their locked in area. When it was time to go into the big crocodile area, the dog accidentally got in ahead of us and our guide had to chase him out! This got all of the croccodiles attention and they were a lot more lively then they normally would be. Our guide had to poke them with a large stick every now and then to get them to back up, lol, they thought we were their lunch!

I think that a trip to Crococun is very affordable and enjoyable. We will return here as well as to Xcaret which we also enjoyed.
