“Excellent bed, friendly staff, poor soundproofing”

The Icon Hotel

4 of 5 stars
Amsterdam, The Netherlands

The Icon is a clean and modern hotel, with somewhat funky interiors and very friendly staff. We have just returned from a 3 night stay, and although the hotel is by no means a luxurious haven, it certainly ticks most of the boxes. To start off, it offers excellent value for money in a city where good hotels seem to charge exorbitant fees. It also has the best approach to breakfast I have encountered - free a la carte breakfast till noon! Although the choice may not be on par with an extensive buffet, you have all you need - eggs made to order, a good selection of cereals, pastries, and fruit, as well as cured meats and cheeses.

You will also get free internet access with your room rate - WiFi across the hotel, although our room had poor reception and we had to resort to the wired option. You also have a Skype compatible phone in every room that simply plugs into your laptop.

Some may find the location of this hotel a little too far from off, although it is no more than 15 minutes walk to the heart of the old city. In my opinion the location was excellent - easily within walking distance of anywhere in the center, and yet on a quiet side street. Prague can get far too touristy in the high season, so moving a street or too away from the constant human flow is an excellent idea.

Despite the fact that the hotel was on a laid-back side street, noise levels could still be an issue for light sleepers. The renovation of the building has retained the original single glazed windows, which means you can hear the trams passing by on the main street 100 meters away, as well as any cars or loud passers-by. Additionally, the soundproofing between rooms also isn't very solid, as we could easily hear people talking in the next room. However, the guests of the hotel do not appear to be the loud drunken type (at least none that we saw) and on weekends the street below is very very quiet so noise would only really be a problem for difficult sleepers.

The crowning glory of this hotel has to be the bed. They have certainly made the wise choice by investing in one of the best bed brands out there from Swedish manufacturer Hastens. I truly had some of the best sleep ever!

To wrap up - a well-priced hotel that gives you no reason to complain and a great bed to sleep in. I'll definitely be booking a room here next time we are in Prague.

“Trendy Hotel in Prague”

The Icon Hotel

The Icon was a great trendy hotel near the National Museum. The breakfast, which was included in the room rate, was really good, and the staff was very friendly. The only slightly negative aspect was the location, which was a solid 15 minute walk from the Old Town Square, the heart of Prague. (Perhaps not so bad if it wasn't raining during our visit.) I would guess there would be cheaper hotels closer to the square that would also be a nice experience, although they likely won't be as clean and stylish as the Icon.

“Well designed, a pleasure to stay there”

The Icon Hotel

I have stayed in many design/boutique hotels for both pleasure and work.

On this occassion I was working and this hotel was definitely up to scratch with a much more personal and intimate atmosphere than say the Prague Hilton (more on that later..)

Free Wifi internet is becoming the norm so it still annoys me that hotels still charge for it. Fortunately the Icon offered not only FREE wifi, an ethernet connection but also an ipod connector to play music through the lcd tv and a dvd player.

The first couple of nights I stayed in room 101 but then I moved to a quieter room 305 since my previous room was adjacent to a "cabaret" club which played thumping hpuse all night. If you are looking for some peace and quiet I would definitely recommend a room at the back of the hotel on a higher floor. Even though I changed room at 1am , this was done with the minimum of fuss by the front desk and they even showed me the room first to make sure I was going to be happy.

The bathrooms were spacious and there was plenty of space to put toiletries, a common problem in some design hotels with form over function.

I have to agree with another reviewer that I didn't get on too well with the pillows but the bed was comfortable enough.

Breakfast was lovely and staff were very attentive, asking if you had enough of their freshly cooked pancakes and regularly making fresh (decaf) coffee for me.

The location of the hotel is within easy walking distance of the centre and the JetSet bar is good to get a few not too expensive cocktails in before hitting the town.

I must make a last mention to the Zen Thai Massage attached to the hotel. This is well worth going to if you want to experience a professional massage at reasonable prices compared to London. The masseuses really don't hold back !

“Fantastic Hotel Close to Everything”

The Icon Hotel

5 of 5 stars
Indianapolis

I have traveled to Europe at least 20 times over the last ten years, and, for the money, the Icon Hotel is one of the best hotels I've ever stayed in. I reserved a standard room and was expecting a tiny room with a tiny bathroom, but both were large and extremely comfortable. I am pretty picky about noise, but my room which faced the street was really quiet. The breakfast is unbelievable--typical of hotels that charge 15-20 euros for! And the free internet in the room is another plus.

The staff goes out of their way to help you. I'm a pretty undemanding guest, but did make two requests that required the staff to go out of their way, which they did without hesitation.

Away from the grafitti of Wenceslas Square, I found Prague to be a charming city. I stumbled upon the best restaurant I've ever experienced in Europe--John and George Cafe located in Mala Strana on the south side of Charles Bridge. Fablous salads, entrees, dessert and a bottle of wine for about $60 US for two.

There is no doubt that I would stay at the Icon Hotel again. It's location is ideal, on a side street and only 10 minutes from all the major sites.

“Great service”

The Icon Hotel

May 19, 2008

We've just come back to a trip to Prague and would definitely return to the Icon hotel. The staff were very efficent and made sure that we were very comfortable, inlcuding the loan of an umbrella!

My only complaint would be that the walls seem to be made of tracing paper as we could hear the rooms next door when they had a shower! Also, the pillows weren't to my comfort levels but this is more a personal taste thing rather than anything else.
