My family recently concluded our first trip to Punta Gorda where we spent 5 delightful nights at Hickatee Cottages. We are fairly well seasoned travelers to Central America and Mexico and can sincerely state that we have never enjoyed the high level of professionalism, hospitality and warmth afforded to us by the proprietors, Ian and Kate Morton. We like to frequent places that “have not yet been discovered” and P.G. certainly fit the bill. Hickatee Cottages is located a short bike ride from town in a park-like setting. The beautifully landscaped grounds are adorned with transplanted orchids salvaged from the dense forest that make up the most of the XX acres of the property. An extensive nature path winds thought the lowland forest and provides habitat to a small troop of howler monkeys and well over 100 bird species. Ian is quick to offer entertaining anecdotes regarding the local ecology¾make sure to ask him about the “jungle fairies”. We were continually amazed by Kate’s skills in the kitchen. Hickatee prints a fresh menu daily. If you intend to eat dinner on the premises, make sure to let Kate or Ian know the evening before to allow them plenty of time to get the necessary ingredients. On one occasion, we got our wires crossed and after an exhausting day touring local attractions we informed our unprepared hosts that we intended to dine with them. Ian and Kate had not expected us and had not done any grocery shopping. Nonetheless, they asked to come back in an hour and there would be dinner available. Much to our amazement, we were seated at our table and handed freshly printed menus with three entrée choices: vegetarian chili, ginger shrimp, and peanut-coconut chicken. Between the four of us, we ordered the three entrées and all were delicious. In the morning, coffee and tea are brought to the veranda of your cottage at the hour of your choosing.
Hickatee Cottages boasts about its environmental ethic, and unlike the “greenwashing” practices of so many operations, their boasting is well-deserved. The cottages are very comfortable, well appointed, and are all built from sustainably harvested local hardwoods with beautifully varnished interiors. The establishment is “off the grid”, relying on solar panels during the day. In addition, fresh drinking water is provided daily in sanitized, reusable bottles. Ian and Kate also clearly see the value in social responsibility and are truly committed to giving back to the community of Toledo buy buying and hiring “local”. They are intimately familiar with local businesses and community relations. Ian is currently managing a butterfly farm that employs and trains numerous local residents in the rearing and preservation of endemic species as well as supporting local production of pupae for export worldwide. My family all left Hickatee with a warm glow from the unparalleled hospitality and the knowledge that we had contributed to the welfare and sustainability of the wonderfully diverse Toledo District.
