As guests at the Hotel Maison Arabe for an extended hen weekend, we were fully acquainted with the lush paradise in which the cooking school is situated as it also houses the pool - a peaceful oasis with sun and seamless poolside waiter service. The hotel (in the heart of the Medina) provides a shuttle out to this beautiful facility and boy did we make use of that.

The cooking lesson on the last afternoon was a welcome respite from the sun. A short lecture on Moroccan cuisine followed by much hilarity in the kitchen making a chicken tagine with preserved lemons and olives, a cumin-laced side salad and an orange salad for desert.

While it cooked, the dada (cook) kindly minded our tagines while we returned to the pool for a dip for 40 minutes, returning to the beautiful kitchen (I want one just like that) to plate our food and move outside to the shaded patio area to eat the fruits of our labour.

Not too hard. Good fun. Mohammed who facilitated the event had lovely easy style and it really was the perfect end to a fabulous long weekend.

Coming to the La Maison Arabe cooking classes every year with my travel group is always a highlight of our journey. Stepping into the walled organic gardens, brushing the scented hedges and quietly watching the turtles in the pond is one of my favourite sensory experiences of Morocco. The grounds are immaculately and lovingly kept and the school beautifully fitted with individual cooking stations, colourful ceramics and fresh organic ingredients. Mohamed is an intelligent and informative host and teacher. His knowledge is wide and diverse. He is always accompanied by 'dada' and although a quiet and gentle woman, holds a strong traditional presence in her kitchen. After the meal is cooked it is a great delight to sit with Mohamed and other travellers from all over the world to share a sumptuous meal by the shade of the palm trees overlooking the aqua pool. I will always highly recommend this great experience.

“Sensational Food & a very knowledgeable teacher”

My husband and I chose Morocco as a holiday destination after seeing a cooking show in Australia. Our ten day trip was finished off with a cooking class at La Maison Arabe. The location was so very beautiful, the kitchen was sensationally set up and Mohammed and his lovely assistant were great (and patient!) teachers.
I found the class extremely helpful but my far more "competent in the kitchen" husband found it a bit simple and easy for his abilities. Mohammed was a wealth of knowledge and knew so much about Morocco and its culture, it was wonderful to sit down with him. On our return, my husband emailed Mohammed for more recipes which Mohammed promptly sent. I am definitely looking forward to the Moroccan dinner party my husband is planning. This class is certainly a great family class to do and the food we ate after the class was sensational, even if I do say so myself :)

My daughter and I spent 2 1/2 weeks in April traveling throughout Morocco. One of the highlights of our trip was the cooking class sponsored by La Maison Arabe (which is also a wonderful place to stay while in Marrakech). We attended the class in a beautiful, tranquil setting on our last day in the fascinating city of Marrakech and learned how to prepare the lamb tagine with couscous and 7 vegetables. It was by far the best tagine that we had while on our trip! Mohammed was an excellent translator and provided us with lots of information throughout the lesson. The two cooks showed us how to prepare the meal step by step. After arriving home, I e-mailed Mohammed and asked for some recipes which I received that same day. This is an experience not to be missed!
