This took my breath away. I have seen pictures all my life of the Pyramids but to see them in real life is truly amazing. When the people come up to you to sell things just keep walking and say "No Thank You." and they will leave you alone. Just do not stop walking and never take anything out of their hands or they will not take it back.

“Why are the Giza Pyramids one of the 7 wonders of the World?”

There are 97 known big pyramids in Egypt (plus many smaller ones for wives and children). What makes the Giza Pyramids different?

The size of the Giza Pyramids cannot be appreciated unless you have visited them but it is not the size that makes them one of the 7 wonders of the world. It is the mystery which surrounds them.

On one level inside each of the 3 Giza Pyramids, food does not decompose (23rd step of 1st Pyramid, 7th step of 2nd pyramid and 3rd step of smallest). This is the same level that Pharaohs were buried on. Gravity is lighter inside the pyramids than out. Electronic equipment does not work inside them. The precision of building them such a long time ago. The scientists remain at a loss to answer these questions.

There are sellers (and tricks) galore at the pyramids. Unless you want to buy something, use the term "La Shokran" being "No thank you" then when they continue "Ana mish eyes" being "I don't want". They soon get the hint and leave you alone. Be warned that they will want money to have their photo (or their camel's photo) taken or to take a photo of you. 2 Egyptian pound is enough or 5 Egyptian pound for tourist police.

“Brilliant, but annoying locals”

Went to the pyramids in December 07. Takes about 2 hours across Cairo from the airport in the worst traffic I've ever seen. When you get near you can see the pyramids from a few miles off and you start to get excited. As you get closer they get more spectacular. We went into the tomb of the "capped" pyramid (Kefrin) because we didnt have enough egyptian money to go into the "great " pyramid. They dont take pounds or dollars. Probably about £2 per person.

Walked around the site for an hour before the coach set off. The camel drivers and hawkers are annoying, but just tell then you are albanian and they leave you alone. Even if you take a picture and they get in the way they try to charge you. They try to hold your camera to take your photo then charge you. Hawkers try to put things in your hand then charge you. A bit too full on but just be firm and they go away.

The pyramids and sphinx are absolutely magical. Its one of the few places that should be on everybodys to-see list, Definitely the best place i ever been. We drove through Cairo to the museum and saw King Tut and the mummies, also magic.

Cairo itself is a must see. especially if you are safely on a coach with a guide and bodyguard. It has a contrast between rich and poor that ive never seen, nothing like it anywhere in Europe.

“Camel riding”

I took my 6 year old to the Pyramids last year and she loved it. However i must mention that the camel riding is not up to par with the setting. Our guide left us to negotiate with the herder without much warning of what to expect.. Kickback...? There are signs telling that the "official" price is minimal, like $2-$3, but they tried to get us for about $50 each. We were promised a one hour trek but it was about a 10 minute hurried walk. We ended up paying about $20 and they still wanted more for the young boy that led us around. i was just glad it was over .
Egypt was a wonderful and friendly place but try to get a heads up before tackling the camel bargaining ordeal and you'll be much happier.

“Awesome, yet be careful”

What can you say when you stand in front of the pyramids - truly awesome sight. Just a word of warning though be very careful of offers to ride camels etc. They use intimidation and threats to extort money out of you. three members of our tour group had bad experiences. If you must , negotiate a reasonable price first and stick to it, they wil try to extort more money out of you. We heard of lady in a previous tour that was taken out into the desert for an hour and half and they refused to broing her back until they had cleaned out her wallet. I had three guys surrounding all shouting at me to give more money. Another member of our group was taken behind some rocks and physically threatened. A favorite trick is to say they have no change and take the note and then clear off. The security guards around are useless. In short marvel at the sights, enjoy the experience but keep yourself to yourself and don't let anybody take a photograph of you except members of your own group.
