This is going to be hard to explain.
First of all, we were there the final weekend it was open. They have now closed for renovations and will re-open in the fall...however renovations will still be ongoing until summer 2008 according to their signs.
We were in town for a conference, which is why we still stayed there despite construction. The first room we were given...I don't even think it WAS a room. The room number was written on the wall outside with magic marker. The window looked out onto a wall about 10 feet in front of it.(the hotel is "L" shaped and we were looking out at a balcony wall from the other side). The maid's room was next door, and the elevators were on the other side. We could not sleep, at all, all night, due to elevator noise. I cannot explain how bad it was...It was terrible. We called the next morning and asked to move; we were told no other rooms were available in the entire hotel. I found that hard to believe.
We called again that night....and voila rooms were now available according to another woman. She said they had been available for the entire time, nothing had opened up. So, we were able to move to a new, quiet room with an ocean view.
The rooms were okay, bathrooms okay, nothing special. Huge walk incloset, which was very nice. Could fit a dozen suitcases in there, had tons of hangers and full length mirrors.
The hotel is having massive construction which was terrible. I knew it going in, and I was there on the company's dime, so it didn't bother me. But it was noisy, there were cranes, jackhammers, bulldozers, etc, everywhere. The pool area smelled like diesel and exhaust.
People have stated on here that there is only about 10 feet of beach at the hotel. This is false, and these people must not be able to count. There is a good 30+ feet of beach from the water to the grassy bluff area you walk down. This is the same as every other strip of beach for the hotels up north. I don't see what the problem is. They have free beach chairs and umbrellas, people working on the beach to carry the chairs for you, plenty of towels. Other than the noise of the construction work that you could still hear from the hotel, it was perfectly fine. Now, when the tide was high, yes, the area of usable beach was lessened due to the waves...but that's no fault of the hotel, that's just mother nature! It still left more than 10 feet of usable beach. This is the same for miles up north here by the northern hotels. No, it's not the massive 1/2 mile deep of sand like in south beach, but it's more than enough area to set up chairs, umbrellas, etc away from other people.
The restaurant, Aquatica, was so-so. Just crummy beach food, nothing great. The beach bar area was nice and crowded. Their main restaurant was already closed for construction. The indoor lobby and bar was beautiful.
The staff was friendly, other than that one incident when we couldn't change rooms. There were always cabs waiting at the hotel, never had to wait for one. The bell man would call one up immediately for us.
They had a computer/printer set up to print boarding passes for people flying out which was helpful.
My main complaint is that they only had 4 elevators, and only 3 seemed to work. We had to wait about 10 min each time, and this was a major complaint from everyone I talked to. They need more elevators.
The gym area was nice and had plenty of machines.
My main problem with the hotel is that it is a loooong way from South Beach. If you're at the hotel, you're stuck there unless you have rented a car or want to take a cab. A cab ride to the main South Beach area is about $12 with tip (more at night when traffic is bad). That can really add up doing it once or twice a day. You have to go to south beach if you want to eat, shop, or basically do anything.
I think the hotel is nice for families but NOT until they are done renovating in 2008. If you are young and are looking to spend a lot of time going out to restaurants, bars, shopping, etc....don't stay here. it's just too far off (4 miles or so...not walkable).
There is another conference I can attend this fall when they re-open that is being held again at Eden Roc. I love Miami and will be attending this other conference, but will NOT be staying at this hotel. I'd rather stay in the South Beach area and just take a cab up to Eden Roc once a day, instead of having to take a cab everday at lunch and dinner to leave Eden Roc.
