“Grotto Bay - Horrible, had to Switch”

Grotto Bay Beach Resort

The place was just horrible in person compared to stories and photos. Our beach front (more expansive) room faced the beach, but has a sports rental shop in the way of our view. The ice machine was broken, there was a cockroach in our hallway, the room looked like it was from the 80s, there was no room service menu, no laundry instructions/bag, the staff were rude. The restaurants and bars closed early (apparently no cruise ships = no nightlife). Front desk was overwhelmed. It just wasn't worth the money. We also ran into a fierce battle with mgmt when we wanted to cancel after 1 night. They were trying to force 2 night min. Well, I took photos of all the stuff, threatened them with Attorney General, etc. Finally they gave in, but all in all, it wasted a 1/2 day we could have spent on the beach or eating Fish chowder. Yeah, the caves are cool, but the hotel private beach is ugly & small. St George is a dead district, so don't expect anything convenient in that area. Go to hamilton. Try Fairview Princess - it was cheaper, better room and right near the shopping/restaurants.

“Nice for a Short Stay - Randy NY”

The property is just a five minute ride from the airport. Instead of waiting 40 minutes for your tranfser bus to fill up, just catch a taxi and pay the 10 bucks.... you'll be checked in and on the beach ahead of the crowd.
Our room (#468) was just okay and needed an update. A/C worked great and was on when we walked in. Keep in mind -- there are no elevators to upper floors. All buildings are walk ups. I noticed that some of the other rooms appeared to have already been remodeled. Hotel buffet breakfast is good and on the expensive side (about $44 per couple), just like everything else on the island.
The beach had plenty of chairs and umbrellas along with a nice pool, outside restaurant for lunch, bathrooms, hot tub etc. There are two cool caves for a quick exploration. You can also swim in one. There is another larger one about a 10 minute walk away for $16 pp. The hotel beach offers flat calm water with a view towards the airport (no noise to speak of) and excellent snorkeling. There is also a dive boat on site.
The bus service however is not convenient at all. It only runs every hour and you have to figure out how far away your stop is from the time posted on the schedule. Not cheap either... $8 pp round trip and because it stops so frequently, expect to use up about 45 minutes to Hamilton. A taxi will cost you about $25 to Hamilton -- each way.

“Just okay - wouldn't go back”

Grotto Bay Beach Resort

Beach and pool are very pleasant; Rooms are just okay and ours was a renonovated one - nothing remarkable. Found many locals to be downright rude and not the least bit welcoming, which could have been the result of three cruise ships in port during our stay - that's a lot of people on a small island. Because you can't rent cars, taxis, scooters or buses are the only option and getting around can be quite expensive or dangerous (if you go the scooter route).

The hotel offered no room service, even for coffee in the morning. There's also no spa on site .. It's basically an adequate hotel on a beach (not ocean), directly across from the airport.

Though the island is beautiful, have been to others that are nicer with warmer people. I would not put Berumda on my return list.

“Pleasant but let down by some of the staff.”

Before submitting my review, I read some of the other recent ones here to see if my experiences and opinions were unique. They're not.

I stayed as part of a party of 7 and find it hard to write an objective review as the attitude of some of the staff varied, as others found, from outstandingly courteous, polite, and professional, to downright rude and obstructive.

To begin with the positive, the location and facilities of the hotel, whilst not the best on the island, are more than acceptable and are good value for what is an expensive destination.

The food is good average, and one of the chefs, I believe he is an Indian, specially prepared the Wahoo that we caught on a deep sea fishing expedition and it was utterly delicious .... my mouth is watering at the memory and I'd love to know what spices he used!

Some of the staff deserve mention by name for their professionalism and friendliness. Christian, Ramoo (restaurant staff), Tim and Zena (concierges), Isaac at the pool bar, and Paul the tennis coach are amongst these. Others are at the opposite end of the scale and should not be in the hospitality industry.

I filled in a guest comment card on leaving and the next day had a personalised email from Mr. Martens, the general manager. Given that such things are usually ignored, that impressed me and shows that the management are concerned.

Our rooms were spotlessly clean and well maintained, but after the first night we asked to change rooms as the original room was on the ground floor and we were not totally happy about sleeping with the sliding doors open (I loathe air conditioning). The evening receptionist (Jodi) who arranged this was charming, but when I went to reception in the morning, as per her instructions, to ask for the move to take place, the receptionist on duty told me rudely that she knew nothing about it and that I should have come before 9 am for the move to be done. She then more or less dismissed me and I had to insist on being dealt with.

Overall a pleasant stay but the quality and character of the resort are marred by the attitude of a small precentage of the staff.

“Very average”

The property wants to be a resort, but lacks the amenities. There are very few food options, and you are not able to get food during off meal hours. There is very little night life, one night we were there, the hotel had a two person band, but the other nights there was zero to do. There are a few roosters on the property which makes it difficult to sleep in. The facility is in need of many renovations, which they are doing…but ask if the room has been renovated when you call. Overall the “resort” was average.
