We spent our 25th anniversary at the Grotto Bay Beach Resort and had an amazing time. I was a little skeptical about the resort after having read some of the reviews. I'm guessing that it's the folks who find something not to their liking that write more of the reviews than those of us who had a pleasant experience. Ours far exceeded my expectations. The nicest thing was the people working at the resort - I had expected a lukewarm response - especially since we were on the all-inclusive plan. I couldn't have been more wrong - these folks went out of their way to make sure we were having a great vacation. Jodi at the front desk even offered to have her husband drive us around the island to find the perfect sunset - even invited us to their home for a glass of wine at sunset. The wait staff was so attentive and friendly! We had a special private dinner scheduled for our anniversary and Veronica and Eugene couldn't do enough to make sure it went perfectly. Each person we came in contact with was so helpful with suggestions for things we should do and see - the Concierge/Guest Svc's folks knew exactly what we should do/see on our first visit to Bermuda.
The resort itself was perfect for us. We had an oceanfront renovated room that was great. I don't know what the older rooms are like, but this was as good as any other resort hotel room I've stayed in - and our standards are pretty high. The only thing lacking was shelf space in the bathroom.
The resort was fairly quiet when we were there (the weekend after Labor Day) - we didn't have to wait for meals, drinks, etc. The beach area was nice and very calm --- there are other beaches that have bigger surf - but the clear beautiful water and perfect sand at Grotto Bay were wonderful. We did a little snorkeling from the beach - loved the fish feeding area and all the fish there too! Wish we had been there longer to take advantage of all the water activities that were offered/included in the all -inclusive package. Next time!
We ate all of our breakfasts and dinners at the hotel - and they were really good. The full breakfast was very good - great omelets made to order, too. The dinners were also good - a little heavy on the gravy on a couple of the dishes for my taste, but most everything was very good.
The location of the hotel was terrific! We were able to 'swagger in' to the Swizzle Inn (a very fun time there - the guitar player is the best I've heard!), we got around to everything so quicly on the scooters from where we were, too - The first day we arrived we took public transportation (buses and ferries) all around the island to get an idea of where we wanted to spend more of our time --- it was great and sooo clean! My husband & I are usually too lazy to figure out how to get somewhere and just end up in a taxi - but this was so easy and right outside the hotel, too. The ferry rides are a great way to see different parts of the island, too. I would recommend this to anyone on their first Bermuda trip.
I felt like we got a really good value on both the hotel room, the resort (the grounds are beautiful and the caves are really cool, too!), and the food at Grotto Bay. I would definitely go back there on our next trip to Bermuda!
