“Hyatt Maui - Slightly Underwhelming”

Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa

Sep 24, 2008
2/7 found this review helpful

The Hyatt Maui was generally pleasant – the hotel was clean and the staff were courteous. However, we were underwhelmed on arrival, after assuming it would be a luxurious honeymoon destination. It wasn’t – it was average. The hotel needs a bit of a revamp; it looks seriously 70s with the avocado paint everywhere! Our room was supposed to be non-smoking, but had a strong cigarette whiff. The pool area was very nice, as was the beach front and garden areas. The prices for everything in the hotel were inflated - you're paying London prices for a beer, for example. The biggest annoyance was the 'mandatory supplemental charge' of $15 a day for things like tea and coffee in your room, a daily newspaper and use of the tennis courts. I couldn't find any reference to this charge in the small print, and frankly I would have assumed it to be included, or at the least certainly NOT mandatory! Also, we were charged $20 a day for valet parking – but after pointing out that we didn't have a car this was removed from our bill. Overall, I wouldn’t have bothered paying the extra for the Hyatt. If I’d have known I would have booked into the Ka’anapali Beach Resort a bit further down the road.

“Amazing hotel!”

Came here on our Honeymoon, and had a great time. Rooms were up to date and clean, the staff were very nice and helpful, and the grounds are spectacular. Great location and they were very organized with brunch and towels and all the little things. I would definitely recommend this hotel (and I'm a travel agent so my expectations are high)

“Still beautiful after all these years”

Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa

Sep 23, 2008
5/8 found this review helpful

Our family of 4 stayed here for 6 days 5 nights. It has been over 10 years since we have stayed here for our honeymoon. We thought the entrance/lobby seemed older but was still very beautiful. Breakfast was wonderful, exactly as I remembered. There was a line, but we got seated very quickly. The view was beautiful, and the buffet was a nice selection. Children 4 and under gets to eat the buffet for free. So, my younger son ate for free and my older son just ordered off of the kids’ menu.

The rooms were updated, and well organized. Ours had two beds, a queen, and a double, and it was very comfortable. We each received a lei upon arriving, and we got upgraded to oceanfront. The room had a refrigerator, as well as a walk in closet with a safe. There are free self parking spots, but only if you get there by 7:30-8:00PM. After that, good luck finding a spot! We had a very hard time finding parking one night, but my husband was able to get complimentary valet because there were no spots left. So, it really is a non-issue.

The gym is great! It’s a bit far to get to (you need to walk on the beachwalk in order to get access to it), but they had very nice new machines, and a great ocean view, too. The gym is covered in the $15 resort fee. Since we were paying this fee, we figured we might as well work out, and come home looking hot! Haha.

The hotel is located about a 10 minute beach walk to The Whaler (stores and shops), as well as a 15 minute beach walk to Black Rock (a famous snorkeling destination), so it is a convenient location! And you can check out all the other hotels along the way, as you walk.

Here are my negatives about the hotel…

We thought the pool was extremely crowded. When we went (at end of August), it was packed! I felt the chairs were pushed side by side (touching) next to each other, as well as pushed right up against the pool, as well as all the way out to the walkway. I felt as though I was in a movie theatre trying to get through to my seat. I could be a little biased since we had just arrived from the Hyatt Kauai, which had a more spacious and relaxed pool area. The pool is still stunning after all these years... it just seemed much more crowded than back then..

The Hyatt Maui pool was cold! It was not heated enough (at least not in comparison to the wonderful Hyatt Kauai pool), and there was only one Jacuzzi and the temperature of the Jacuzzi was only warm (like bathwater). The Jacuzzi needs to be hotter! And the Jacuzzi is situated near the kids section, so there are a lot of kids in it. I can see how couples might not like it, but my kids sure did!

I did not like the kids pool section because we had a bad experience on our first day there. There was an unsupervised unruly kid who kept throwing sand or splashing at my children’s faces. Then there was another young kid who tried to submerge my little 5 year old son’s heads underwater as my son was trying to swim and tread water. The parents were either on their cell phones, or just didn’t care. Unfortunately, after that incident, and seeing how crazy crowded it was, we tried to avoid the pool during peak times, or swam on the other side instead. Don't let me put you off though, we did see lots of honeymooners who looked very happy swimming around.
.
But in comparison to the Hyatt Kauai, I thought the Hyatt Maui’s public areas were definitely more stunning. My children really liked the Hyatt Maui - they loved the pool, the penguins, the cranes, flamingoes, and macaws.

“Really Enjoyed the Hyatt”

Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa

5 of 5 stars
Scottsdale, Arizona
Sep 21, 2008
8/9 found this review helpful

After reading several negative reviews on Trip Advisor, I was a little worried about my decision to stay at the Hyatt.

No Worries - we really liked everything about the Hyatt! We had booked the least expensive room type - and the room we were given was just great. It overlooked the garden area and the pool, and we could even glimpse some of the ocean. With the balcony doors open, you could hear the sound of the waves. The room itself had one of the most comfortable beds we've ever slept in, plus a sofa & coffee table, chest and a desk - a fairly spacious room. The balcony was large enough for a table and 2 chairs and felt very private and secluded with all the surrounding greenery. There was a big walk-in closet with safe and a coffeemaker. Best of all, there was a refrigerator in addition to the minibar. There's a nearby Safeway on the way to Lahaina, and we kept the fridge stocked with cold drinks. It wasn't a fancy room, but it had everything we needed and we enjoyed it very much.

When we vacation, we usually have a big breakfast and then skip lunch - so I purchased a package with daily breakfast buffet included. The buffet is terrific (though I wouldn't have wanted to pay for it a la carte!), with a big selection of cold and hot dishes and omelets made to order. We would walk early every morning and then go to breakfast, and there was never a wait. But by 8:30 am, the lines start to get long - so go early.

We liked the Kaanipali location. There's a nice walk along the ocean that passes all the hotels and Whaler's Village (an area of restaurant/shops. There are 2 golf courses - nice but not great, and you get free rounds for touring the Marriott time share next door. If golf is important on your vacation, you probably already know you want to be at Kapalua or Wailea (assuming you're willing to pay the prices!). The pool at the Hyatt is huge and gorgeous, so if you're into tanning, it's a terrific place. The beach is not much, but all the beaches on Maui are public, so you can walk towards Whaler's Village where other hotels have broader beaches, or drive to a really nice beach (like Fleming in Kapalua).

Parking is tight, but we always found a place in the public parking lots (valet parking the evening we arrived was complimentary - nice touch!). The hotel is centrally located, but you will really want a car to get around the island and out to different restaurants. As for restaurants, they're all expensive, but I'd skip the overpriced hotel restaurants and the overrated Lahaina Grill. We loved the Plantation House, IO Restaurant, and Mama's Fish House (which isn't nearly as far away as the concierge will tell you...)

What didn't we like? I felt ripped-off by the recommendations of the concierge and the extremely expensive and boring sunset cruise he booked for us. Walk along the beach and pick up some brochures for activities before you book the expensive ones the concierge will recommend.

All in all, we loved the Hyatt and would certainly stay there again if we went back to Maui (we probably won't because we much prefer the Big Island and Kauai).

“This hotel is amazing!”

Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa

5 of 5 stars
Chicago
Sep 16, 2008

We recently visited Maui for our honeymoon. When we arrived at the Hyatt we were amazed at how beautiful it was. We had a partial ocean view room and had a great view. With the balcony open we could hear the ocean in our room. It was on the beach - just past the pool was the ocean. The staff was friendly. The pool was great. The lobby is amazing - all open with palm trees and penguins and flamingos. It was so nice. There are a lot of nice shops and the Italian restautant is great - we ate there twice!

    • Liked — The grounds were beautiful
