“Very nice, comfortable, new looking, but street noise a problem”

We spent one night at the Doubletree Hotel San Diego-Mission Valley and enjoyed our stay very much. The hotel is located on somewhat of a dead end street in a very nice, upscale neighborhood. The San Diego trolley has a station stop just across the street making it very easy to get around town. Also, there are two large shopping centers within walking distance with many very fine restaurants. The hotel is very well maintained and looks almost new. However, I feel the check in and check out process would be much better served with more than one desk clerk on duty. The one clerk was very busy with telephone calls and complicated requests which forced me to wait longer than I feel is acceptable to check in and check out. Our room was very clean and the bed very comfortable. However, the noise from the adjacent freeway and highway is a significant problem. At first I thought the sliding door had been left open (it wasn’t). This would be a problem for light sleepers or people sensitive to background noise. I will most definitely return to the Doubletree San Diego-Mission Valley when our travel plans call for us to be in the San Diego area. I feel the hotel was a good value.

“$14 per day for self-parking!”

Doubletree Hotel San Diego / Mission Valley

I would describe the hotel a standard hotel with standard amenities. We received warm cookies on arrival but they were way too sweet and did not make up for the sticker shock of $14 per day for self-parking . We are talking about a place outside the heart of San Diego next to the highway ... (And I am used to all kinds of expensive parking ... coming from Manhattan ... The fee just seems unjustifiable for this part of the country/town ...) The room was spacious and looked nice. However, everything felt like it is made of cheap material. Our room on the fourth floor was also quite noisy. The door was not very sound-proof and I heard people coming in and out for much of the late night/early morning. And then there was this out-of-control party in the hotel that led to police blocking off the entrance for a while ... That was beyond the hotel's control, of course. It just did not add up to a good impression ...

“Great stay, would definitely return”

Doubletree Hotel San Diego / Mission Valley

4 of 5 stars
Concord, CA
May 12, 2008

I booked this hotel for the location and positive TripAdvisor reviews, and very glad I did. Because some reviews mentioned freeway noise, I requested the "quiet side" of the hotel, and was happy to receive a room facing away from Highway 163. We were also upgraded to an Executive room with a balcony at no extra charge. The balcony isn't much to scream about since it's just a view of shopping centers and freeways, but my heart belongs to San Diego, so I LOVED it! I stood out there for nearly an hour taking in Mission Valley, the stadium, the trolley... With the window open the freeway noise is there, but once closed, it was barely audible.

The room was spacious, clean, and felt new even though the hotel is not . My only complaint was that the bathroom did not have a separate vanity area, so I couldn't do my hair and makeup while my husband showered. Considering these Executives rooms were renovated in the last few years, that surprised me a bit. That and the funky bathroom pocket door that seemed straight out of a hospital room, but hey, everything else about the room was very nice.

The staff here is super friendly, gave us warm cookies upon check-in, and was very helpful explaining the Trolley system. We also were not charged for parking, even though their website stated it was $12/day. The Trolley is very convenient, a station right across from the hotel, I recommend taking that downtown rather than hunting for parking in the Gaslamp.

If you aren't ultra-sensitive to freeway noise and want a conveniently-located hotel, I definitely recommend the Doubletree at Hazard Center, I would stay here again for sure.

“Perfect hotel for our girls' weekend!!”

Doubletree Hotel San Diego / Mission Valley

4 of 5 stars
Bay Area, California
May 6, 2008

Absolutely loved the whole experience. Of course there were positives & negatives just like any other hotel, but overall very satisfied!

Positives:
directly across the street from trolley station (paid $12 for a three day pass that got us unltd trolley & bus and we went all over), located in a nice quiet area, incredibly friendly and helpful staff (really made you feel like they cared about you & we felt very safe traveling; as a group of girls that meant a lot), great breakfast and evening reception for executive level guests (totally worth springing for), spacious room, very comfortable beds, free shuttle pick-up from airport, free wireless internet

Negatives:
not enough outlets in the bathroom/coffee counter area (had to use an extension cord), no hot water the first day (but was fixed quickly enough when we called the desk), cost is $10 to ride shuttle back to airport (cheaper if there are 4 to split a cab--and they actually got us a towncar for the same price), no fan in the bathroom, not very many towels/ no towel hooks/rack (we hung ours in the closet but housekeeping came quickly when called for more)

The negatives are really pretty trifling. We had a great time & plan on going back! FYI: trolley only runs to about 12:45a so if you're out later a cab will cost you about $20-25 from Gaslamp Quarter or Pacific Beach (we loved PB for the college-age low-cover charge Typhoon bar & the awesome Thai restaurant on Garnet--ask to sit on the floor)

“Stayed 5 Days for Honeymoon”

Doubletree Hotel San Diego / Mission Valley

4 of 5 stars
Minneapolis
Apr 23, 2008

My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon. We wanted to stay at a nice hotel with a few amenities like a spa, restaurant, etc.

We arrived early so were not upset when our room wasn't ready. They gave us warm cookies and we waited in the lobby.

The room was pretty standard but very clean and professional. The bed was huge and very comfortable with tons of pillows.

The hotel offers room service, and for breakfast all you have to do is fill out a checklist of what you want and hang it on the door--very handy and totally delicious!

The spa--as far as we could tell--was a small room near the indoor pool. We both got wonderful massages for a very reasonable price.

The outdoor pool is much better than the hotel's website photos show. It is modern and minimalist and they have bonfires at night.
