Oranjestad is the capital of Aruba, which is an island, so the only ways to get to Oranjestad are either by plane or by boat. Flying in to Oranjestad is the most common method for travelers interested in getting to the island, but cruise ships are also popular.
By plane: Oranjestad is served by Queen Beatrix International Airport ( www.airportaruba.com) with the most frequently used airlines being:
- American Airlines, www.aa.com
- Continental, www.continental.com
- Delta Air, www.delta.com
- United Airlines, www.united.com
- US Airways, www.usairways.com
Visitors flying in to Oranjestad should be aware that the airport is a modern, updated international airport, but there are some foreign habits to consider, including that you will need to pass through an Immigration and Customs like and you are likely to see drug-sniffing dogs passing through the airport.
From the airport: Upon arriving at the airport, visitors can rent a car or take either a bus or taxi to get to their hotel destination. Taxi fares are regulated and range between $13 and $20 depending on the location of the hotel. The drive is usually about ten to twenty minutes long.
By boat: Oranjestad is a popular cruise ship destination and more and more people arrive to the island this way each year. Cruise ships dock at the Aruba Port Authority ( www.arubaports.com/cargo ) which is located approximately five walking minutes away from downtown Oranjestad.
