The nearest large international airports to the Samana Peninsula are the Puerto Plata Airport and the Las Americas Airport near Santo Domingo on the south coast. From these airports there are numerous flights from the United States as well as other Caribbean destinations. It takes about four to five hours of driving time from either of these locations.

Connecting flights may also be available to the Samana Arroyo Barril Airport, and there are limited international flights from other Caribbean islands. But check with your airline to see if there is the possibility of a direct flight. In 2007 the Samana International Airport in El Catey is scheduled to open and this will include flights from the United States and other destinations, which should really open the peninsula to the tourists trade. Until that time getting there requires a bit of time and patience but it is worth it.

There are shuttle buses and taxis from the various airports, and even with a multi-hour drive these can be fairly affordable considering the distance. Check with the driver to confirm the fare. If you’re driving a rental car, the service counters are available in the baggage claim area at both Puerto Plata and Las Americas. An international driver’s license is not required in the Dominican Republic but the road condition varies from very good to very bad, especially in the rural parts of the island so be warned before you begin your trip.
