The small island of Saba isn’t on the mainstream radar as a tourist getaway, yet the island depends heavily on tourism nonetheless. For this reason crime and safety are taken very seriously. Likewise, unlike other Caribbean islands, Saba has a small population that makes it much like a small town. As a result Saba has generally been a very safe place to visit. Petty street crime is rare, and even thefts in hotel are fairly uncommon.

But as with visiting any strange town, you should still be on guard. While the locals are extremely friendly you’re not going to be the only tourist on the island, and there have been reports of theft by other visitors. The best advice is to be on guard with you possessions. This is also true when leaving items on the beach, as valuables left unattended have a habit of disappearing.

If you’re heading out to the interior for a bike ride, hike or nature walk consult on where to go with your hotel or guides. These areas can be isolated and some of the cliffs can be hazardous, so it is advisable to let someone know where you’re going and when you might return.

Visitors should avoid any illegal drugs including marijuana. The punishment for possession can be harsh, and the customs has also stepped up efforts, so no attempts should be made to import or expert even small quantities for “personal use,” or any other reason.

The sun is also very strong in this part of the Caribbean, and you can get sunburned very quickly and quite seriously. Use a strong sunscreen and protect your eyes with good quality sunglasses at all times.
