Grand Bahama is less than 70 miles from the Florida coastline, so getting to the island is easy, whether by sea or air. As the Bahamas are a popular Caribbean destination, there are several airlines with commercial and charter flights that land at Nassau, Freeport and a few of the outer islands.

Grand Bahama International Airport at Freeport is served by several major airlines (AirTran Airways, American Eagle, Bahamasair, Continental, Delta and US Airways) with frequent direct flights from Chicago, Atlanta, Washington, D.C, and a few cities in Florida. US Airways also offers weekly flights from New York and Philadelphia. As the airport has US Border Pre-clearance, it is wise to leave extra time when departing from this location. You can also fly into the airport at the Bahamian capital, as Bahamasair offers 5 daily flights between Nassau and Freeport. A mailboat also runs between Nassau and Grand Bahama, but there is only one run a week and the trip takes 12 hours.

From the airport, you can take a bus into town. There are free government ferries that will transport you from the Port Lucaya harbor in Freeport to other towns around the island. You may also rent a motor scooter, which requires a valid driver’s license. These can be gotten for under $40 a day. Rental cars are also available (major companies such as Avis, Dollar and Thrifty are represented at the airport) for $50 to $100 per day.
