Once you arrive on the island, whether at the Freeport airport or from the city marina, there are many ways to get around Grand Bahama as well as the Bahamas Islands as a whole.

The Grand Bahama Taxi Union has several stations around the island, one of which is at the Freeport Harbour. The company provides both taxis and buses to hotels and other towns on the island from the Port Lucaya Marketplace and the International Bazaar. For buses, the fare is $1 within Freeport and more for towns further out (for McLean’s Town, the furthest station out, the fare is $8) Exact change is required. Another way of getting to McLean’s Town is via the free government ferry, which leaves Sweeting’s Cay twice a day (once in the early morning and another time in the late afternoon) and arrives in McLean’s Town about 20 minutes later.

There are also vehicle rentals on the island; all the major rental car agencies have locations in Freeport, and a few local companies will offer their services as well. To rent, a valid driver’s license from the United Kingdom, United States or Canada is required, and can be used for up to three months for driving within the Bahamas. Visitors can also apply for an international driver’s permit at the city office upon arrival.
