There are a lot of special events happening on Grand Bahama year-round. Check local calendars and advertisements for the latest postings, but here are a few to get you started.
The huge Grand Bahama Summer Junkanoo Street Festival spans over 8 weeks of summer. Local bands jam in the streets as residents take part in song contests and other festivities. In early June, there is the annual Grand Bahama Island Sailing Regatta; as the sloops race around the island, those who remain on shore celebrate with dance, music and food. Later in the year, the International Bazaar in Freeport plays host to the International Festival, when locals set up displays to celebrate their culture with food, dance and costume exhibitions.
The island of Grand Bahama is host to many golf tournaments. One of these is hosted by AirTran Airways, which donates proceeds from the event to help abused children. The golf courses used are usually the ones found around Port Lucaya.
Other important dates on the Bahamian calendar are Independence Day on July 10 (the Bahamas were declared independent of Great Britain on this day in 1973) and Discovery Day on October 13 (when Christopher Columbus first sighted the Caribbean in 1492). On the latter date, there is a large cultural festival held in the streets.
