Travelers should be respectful of the culture of Sinai and the Red Sea area during their travels there.  This is especially true in the modern times when there remains a schism in the relations between the Muslim world and the rest of the Western world.  Travelers from western countries, especially those from the United States , should take extra care to inform themselves about appropriate behavior in the area and to act accordingly.

One of the areas in which the Muslim culture differs from the traditional Western culture is in the treatment and behavior of women.  Single women traveling along to the area have encountered problems in the past.  These problems are diminishing, both as a result of changes in the culture there but also as a result of traveler’s increasing understanding for the behavior of this culture in regards to this issue.  Women should take extra care not to wear revealing clothing or to look men in the eyes.  This may be difficult for women from other countries but it should be considered important.  After all, when in Rome …
